NEW YEAR’S EVE

posted in Mydish's blog on Mon Dec 31 2007
Whether it’s an elegant dinner, a drinks and late supper gathering, or a boozy bash, with the crowd waiting for the tall, dark stranger to be the ‘first footer’ through the door, New Year will be celebrated by many the world over.
Auld Lang Syne, surely one of the most recognised songs, will be sung to times gone by, followed by greetings and wishes for the health and prosperity of friends, family and loved ones, and if we’re lucky, being kissed under the mistletoe by someone we treasure.
Food associated with this night is Shortbread, offered to first-footers, Black Bun, a very dark, rich plum cake, traditionally washed down with many “Het Pints”
- spiced ale mixed with eggs and whisky. There are also triangular-shaped mincemeat puffs, New Year Godcakes and Petticoat Tails (from the French Petites Gatelles - small cakes).
Champagne is the drink associated with toasting good times, but remember to have non-alcoholic drinks for children, drivers or those sworn off the demon drink after over-indulging at Christmas.
This is one celebration when you can say with a clear conscience that the clean-up can wait until next year.
