Carol’s How to – make a drum cake

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

My sons 13th birthday party and my mum and I decided to make a drum cake – here’s how we did it.

We made 9 8 inch sponge cakes and 2 12 inch sponge cakes.  I used Myrna’s hot butter milk sponge for a never fail cake and for the 12 inch cake i added a table spoon of cocoa and a tablespoon of drinking chocolate to make a chocolate birthday cake.

To sandwich the cakes together we used our buttercream icing, Lurpak I find keeps the icing white.

I made 4 “drums” – 2 with 2 cakes sandwiched together (1 8 inch and one 12 inch) and then 1 drum cake had 3 cake layers and the last one had 4 layers.

I covered all the cakes in buttercream icing and then got some ready rolled icing and died it red.  I rolled it out and stuck it around the drums and then I used kitkats to make the struts on the side of the drums.  I finished it off with silver foil at the top and at the bottom of the drums.

Birthday cakes for 8 year old boys

Monday, March 21st, 2011

We had so much fun creating a football birthday cake – it was made as 2 halves and stuck together with buttercream icing.  I spent Saturday morning decorating my little masterpiece – only to have to remove all the top layer and start again.
I was completely stressing out over the pattern on the football – I know it’s a bit over the top really as the fact that it was round was good enough for all the little 8 year old boys.  But I didn’t realise at first that football patterns are made up of hexagons and pentagons.  And then when I tried to copy my sons football, it wasn’t the traditional black and white variety that I think of , but a new FiFa designed football.

Only after I struggled trying to make each alternate block black (chocolate brown) and white did I realise that it is only the pentagons that are coloured!

It only mattered to me (and my older boys just made fun of me) but in the end we had a spread of cupcakes –I am going to share my cupcake class experience with you next – chocolate crispies and my husband made chocolate chip shortbread…today I diet!

A Cake for a special occasion

My mum and dad (Myrna and Alfred Young) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary today and we had a big lunch for family and their closest friends – which took us up to 80 guests.  The only children there were mine and my sisters although Amy and Hannah are now 18 and 20 so don’t really count as children anymore.

Its lovely when you have something so special to celebrate and I always think it is great to celebrate happy times.  Eveyone was really happy for Mum and Dad and were there to share the moment – there was a really lovely warm feeling all day today.

My Parents got married in CapeTown in December 1960 and their honeymoon was on the ship that brought them back to the UK.

I spent last night making their anniversary cake which was the recipe we always use for birthday cakes – “Myrna’s birthday cakes” – a never fail recipe.

I then filled the 2 cakes with whipped cream and fresh strawberries and iced the top with butter icing.  The cakes itself I cut into the shape of a book in the theme of “This is your Life – 50 Years together” and I printed and laminated photos that represented key occasions in each of the 5 decades.

It made me realise how special family is and how important it is to cherish every special time you have together – here is the cake
