6 Valentines Day Ideas for Dinner Menus

Friday, February 10th, 2012

As February 14th fast approaches, no doubt many of you have mixed feelings. Will you indulge in its festivities with your loved one or choose to openly ignore it with a scrooge like demeanor. The original Valentine’s day is named, rather sadly, after 14 early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, one of whom apparently defied the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, by secretly marrying Roman soldiers to their sweethearts. Marriage was not allowed under the Emperor as it was thought that married men made bad soldiers. The legend goes that while imprisoned for his crime, St Valentine cured the jailer’s daughter of her blindness and that after his execution they found a hand written note in his cell addressed to her saying “From your Valentine”.

A more tangible link to the romantic elements of Valentine’s day first came about with Chaucer’s poem Parlement of Foules (1382) where he said “For this was Saint Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”  After this the tradition of hand written cards given to lovers and secret hearts and mementos from admirers came commonplace. Apart from cards and flowers, food had always been an indulgence shared by lovers and singletons alike. Chocolates or various candies in the shape of hearts have long been a common Valentine’s day gift. Of course people do tend to go out to celebrate valentines these days, typically in an expensive restaurants that will set couples back around £100+, so we are looking at romantic alternatives at home.

To Valentine or not to Valentine…that is the question!

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I Have 4 boys in my house so when I get Valentines cards and buy 4 at a time I always get really strange looks at the till and feel the need to explain myself “3 sons and 1 husband” so I don’t look like a real player!!!   But through the years there has always been different views on Valentine.

When I was first going out with my husband I used to leave my card on the stairs as he went out to remind him to get me one.  Now I tell him “don’t forget it Valentines Day” so I don’t have to get dissapointed.

His view is adamant “I don’t need a commercial day to make me tell you I love you” – bah humbug – so we don’t go out to over inflated priced restaurants but I do like to make something a little special for dinner.

Today I didn’t get breakfast in bed ...but I did get left alone in bed all morning …for a full time working mum with 3 kids that is more special than anything.

That in turn deserves a special dinner.  My favourite is Smoked Salmon a la Carol, followed by Beef Wellington, followed by Raspberry Creme Brule.  (Check out our Valentines Collection for your favourites)

OK so that thought has set me off on my next challenge…to find the best combination of starter, mains and desserts for a romantic dinner or a dinner party.  Its not just about making a great starter or having a fab recipe for the best dessert ever but knowing what goes well with what.  This is going to be my mission over the next few months…please please please tell me your great menu and until then all I can say is watch this space!!!!

Make it a Valentine's Day to Remember

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

OK we all know it’s Valentine’s Day – you just can’t miss it! It’s the time of year where flowers, cards and dinners are traditionally double the price. So for me I much prefer to have fun entertaining at home whether it’s a romantic meal for two or just entertaining some friends.

I start by planning the theme of the menu – is it going to be British, French, Indian and then carry the theme all the way through.

I think a French theme tends to set a romantic feel to a dinner, I also find that a lot of my recipes are quite rich so I try to make sure that either the starter or the dessert is not a creamy one.
So my french menu would start with a French onion soup followed by Beef Wellington and finished off with raspberry crème brûlée. Let me know what you think and if you would cook something similar.

If you are stuck for ideas here are some more suggestion from the team.

Helga’s Italian Menu
Italian food is one of my favourites so on the Saturday night I am having a few friends round. Usually on a Saturday we go out but you know that the night before Valentine’s restaurant will be packed and serving the obligiatory set menu!!. To start I will serve bruchetta (with loads of garlic), followed by lasagne everyones favourite and for dessert yummy tiramisu. Washed down with some lovely Italian wine. On Sunday later afternoon I will cook a traditional British roast – roast lamb (we bought a whole sheep from our friends in Norfolk) for just my boyfriend Mark and me. Nothing special but Mark is a sucker for roasts so I know I am on to a winner.

Reena’s Indian romantic dinner
Here are my 3 recipes you could use for your Valentines Indian Dinner – Both the kebabs and the spicy masala fish can be prepped the day before so they are great time savers, you don’t want to spend all night in the kitchen on Valentines! The chocolate cheesecake too, start on it early eve and get it out the fridge just after your meal. The fish main course is something my mum cooks up in minutes for my dad when he’s feeling peckish, and I love it too, I never liked fish until I tried this dish so give it a go. You can easily turn this into a slightly runny curry by frying some long thinly sliced onions and a dollop of tomato puree before adding the fish.
