Oven cooking can be defined as cooking or roasting food in an enclosed heated compartment or receptacle. Ovens, and therefore oven cooking, vary greatly from the traditional electric, fan-assisted or gas oven to the microwave oven. Other ovens may include a traditional Italian Brick Oven, commonly wood fired, and used for cooking traditional Italian Pizza. Other types of oven may include an Indian Tandoori oven used extensively for cooking Naan Bread and the "Aga Stove”, which is an oil burning stove, and is constantly "on" making it ready to use at any time of day or night and also supplying constant heat to the home. This unique characteristic general makes the “Aga Stove” the heart of the home; particularly in winter.

The popularity of ovens in the home makes oven cooking one of the most common methods of cooking. Oven based dishes can be prepared in many different ways and as such literally thousands of oven recipes exist today.
