On a peninsula near Old San Juan in Porto Rico is the Caribe Hilton Hotel, home to what was called in 1954 the "beachcomber's Bar. It was said to be here in on 15 auguat 1954 that bartender Ramon "Monchito" Marrero invented the Pina Colada.
The cocktail Pina Colada or "strained pinapple" emphasises that the pinapple juice should be fresh (not always available in Europe) so canned juice will have to do.
In 1978 Puerto Rico's government declared the Pina Colada the national drink of Puerto Rico.
