Curry Leaves Rice with Onion Raitha

Method

  • 1)Heat a skillet,add few drops of oil,add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, red chilli,curry leaves,coconut gratings, asoefedita. Fry for 5minutes on medium flame.Remove from flame, cool down and grind it to a paste in a blender or mixer by adding some water.

  • 2)Cook the rice as per the instructions on the pack.Allow the rice to cool down once it is cooked.

  • 3)In big pan(sufficient room to add rice and mix),add the remaining oil and heat.Add mustard seeds and few curryleaves.Fry for a minute or so.

  • 4)Add the onions and fry until they are cooked but not brown.add tomatoes and fry them until they are cooked.

  • 5)Now add the curry leaves paste,turmeric powder,salt and fry for 5 minutes or until the water in the paste is half evaporated.

  • Now add cooked rice and mix thoroughly without breaking the the rice.cover and cook for few more minutes.

  • 6)Serve this hot or cold with Onion Raitha.

  • Method for Onion Raitha:

  • Mix all th ingredients under onion raitha and refrigerate for atleast 1/2 hour.

  • Serve one portion of rice with few table spoons of chilled Raitha.

    • I havean't tryed this yet as I am concerned about the ingreadients for the the onion Rairta, it does not seem to have onion in the ingreadients.

    Ingredients

    • FOR RICE:
    • 1 cup basmati rice. washed and drained
    •  water to add as required
    • 1 Onion. sliced
    • 1 tomato chopped
    • 3 tbsp oil
    • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
    • 1 ½ cups Curry leaves
    • 1 tbsp zeera or cumin seeds
    • 3 tbsp coconut gratings
    • 3 or 4 or to taste dried red chilli
    •  salt to taste
    • ¾ tbsp Corriander Seeds
    • a pinch asoefedita powder
    • a pinch Turmeric powder
    • ONION RAITHA:
    • ½ cup yoghurt. plain
    • ¼ cup water
    •  salt to taste
    • 1 tbsp Corriander - chopped to garnish
    • to taste green chillies. finely chopped (optional)
    • 1 small Onion finely chopped/sliced
    • ½ Firm Tomato finely chopped(Optinal)

    This is a traditional south Indian recipe.This recipe is delicious and nutritious too.Even my 1 year daughter loves this dish.This dish can be prepared even with leftover rice.
