Method

  • Chop onion and garlic, saute for few minutes in large pot.

  • Add in the beef and brown on quite a high heat.

  • Once meat is browned add the tomato puree and the oxo cube.

  • Add water until it is just covering the meat and simmer for about 20-30 minutes.

  • Mix the bisto powder in a cup of cold water and add to meat, simmer on hob for about 2 hours on low heat. Alternatively you could put this in a casserole dish and cook in oven at about 160 oC for about 2 1/2 -3 hrs.

  • Once meat is cooked, put into pie dish.

  • Roll out the puff pastry.

  • Lay the rolled out pastry on top of meat. Put small hole in middle for the steam to escape. Cut excess pastry round pie dish off and brush pastry with beaten egg.

  • Cook in oven (200 oC) for about 45 minutes.

    • 800g Stewing Beef
    • 1 onion
    • 1 small clove garlic
    • 1 tbsp tomato puree
    • 1 beef oxo cube (crumbled)
    • 1 tbsp bisto powder mixed with 1 cup of cold water
    • 500g puff pastry
    •  egg for brushing on top of pastry
