" More comforting and filling than the basic pasta covered in cheese sauce. "

Cook your chosen quantity of pasta as usual, but then rinse it thoroughly in cold water immediately - so it doesn't keep getting softer.
Get your casserole dish or pot and add a layer of pasta, a layer of grated cheese and (if you are using them) a layer of frozen (NOT COOKED) peas. Adding peas does increase the fruit and veg count of reluctant kids.
Repeat the layering process until you run out of pasta, cheese and peas but make sure you finish with a layer of cheese on top. You can season with salt and pepper as you go - to taste.
Beat your egg with the milk and pour this over the top so it seeps through. Finish with a layer of breadcrumbs - and some knobs of butter if liked - and pop in a hot oven for about 35 minutes.
Remember that if you're using a deeper dish it make take longer to warm right through to the bottom and you may want to put a lid on once the breadcrumbs have browned to stop them burning.
I like this served with grilled, smoked bacon.

Tom thinks there are lots more interesting things to do than eat - but macaroni cheese has always been a favourite of his. This version gets top marks from him.
Tom's dad (who's never been a mac. cheese fan) likes it as well because there's a lot less sauce than in some versions.
