Grandma Valentine's Chocolate Cake

Method

  • Cream butter and sugar until creamy white in texture
  • Add eggs and mix
  • Add flour and then remaining ingredients
  • Grease 2 small cake tins and pour mixture equally into each tin
  • Cook cake for 25 minutes at gas mark 5 (190C)
  • When ready cool on baking trays
  • I like to fill with strawberry jam and whipped cream sprinling icing sugar on the top for decoration.

  • Tips

    • The quantities are for a small tin. For a larger cake double the quantities. Make into a heart-shaped cake using a tin for Valentine's Day...

    • Hey Ambertru,2 teasp instant coffee in as little boiling water to mix. Leave to cool.This is about right for an 8 oz mix.Hope this helps.Jason.

    • I would love to try this recipe. However I'm American and I don't know what coffee essence is, nor could I find it available to purchase on line. Can someone tell me if you know of a substitution that I can use instead?

    • A good old chum of mine wouldn't drink real coffee. He was a veteran of WW2 and he loed his Camp Coffee. It's not actual coffee, but chicory based. But I can see it would work well in this recipe.

    • Indeed, Camp coffee is still in the shops! Although as I recall my mum had a very old bottle of it that just kept giving... Perhaps when ZoĆ« is 12 (DOB 14.2.08) the bottle I bought last year will still be in circulation - let me know if you try the recipe and like it!
