1. Set the oven to 350f/180c , Gas mark 4. Also, grease a 7 1/2 inch cake tin.
2. Heat the butter and golden syrup until melted, then mix together all the ingredients but the bicarb and the milk.
3. Dissolve the bicarb in the milk then add it to the other mixture. Turn the mixture into the tin.
4. Roll out the almond strips and cut into slices 1/2 an inch in width. Arrange the strips Lattice style and press half a cherry into each of the gaps.
5. Bake in the center of the oven for 1 hour, 45mins or until cooked. If the top starts to overbrown, place some grease-roof paper on top.
