Apple & Pear Crumble

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4

  • For the Crumble...
  • Place the sieved flour and sugar in to a large bowl and mix well. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub in to the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mix looks like breadcrumbs (make sure there are no butter lumps it needs to be fine)

  • For the Filling...
  • Butter a 9 inch ovenproof dish. Lay the sliced fruit to cover the bottom, a layer of apples and then sprinkle halfof the 50g of sugar over them evenly, then place the sliced pears on top sprinkling the rest of the sugar evenly over the top of these.

  • Sprinkle the crumble mix evenly over the top of all of the fruit,covering every part.

  • Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until it is browned and the fruit mixture is bubbling.

  • Serve with Cream/ Ice Cream or Custard.
  • Tips

    • I also put a small layer of raspberries at the bottom of one that I made when I had a few left over from making Jam, just a very thin layer, adds a bit of colour and a little more depth.

      Alternatively - double up the apples and just have a good old Apple Crumble :o)

    • FOR THE CRUMBLE
    • 300g Plain Flour (sieved)
    • 175g Unrefined Brown Sugar
    • 200g Unsalted Butter (cubed and at room temperature)
    • Knob of butter for greasing
    • FOR THE FILLING
    • 250g apples peeled cored and cut into ½-inch (1-cm) chunks
    • 250g Confrence Pears peeled cored &, cut into 1cm chunks
    • 50g Unrefined Brown Sugar
    • 1 tbsp Plain Flour
    • 1 pinch Ground Cinnamon
