Method

  • Cream marg, sugar and syrup together.
  • Add beaten egg.
  • Add flour, cocoa & baking powder.
  • Add milk with sodium bicarb mixed in.
  • Tip into two greased and floured 7-inch tins and bake in the middle of the oven at Gas Mark 5 for 25-30 minutes.
  • When cooked and cooled, sandwich together using butter icing: cream all ingredients together


  • Decorate the top with cocoa icing and sprinkle with smarties. Add candles for a birthday cake.
  • Tips

    • Chocolate butter icing: cream all ingredients together until soft enough to spread.

      Chocolate glace icing: sieve icing sugar, add vanilla essence and cocoa then small amounts of warm water/fruit juice until the mixture is ready to spread.

    • 2 oz margarine
    • 4 oz caster sugar
    • 2 tbs syrup
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
    • ΒΌ pint milk
    • 6 oz plain flour
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 2 tbs cocoa powder
    • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
    • BUTTER SANDWICH ICING
    • 8 oz icing sugar
    • 1-3 oz butter
    •  milk or orange juice
    • 6 tbs cocoa
    • CHOCOLATE GLACE ICING
    • 8 oz Icing Sugar Sieved
    • 4-6 tbs cocoa powder
    •  vanilla essence
    •  warm water/fruit juice
