Great recipe for birthday cake, Hot butter milk sponge cake - my kids love it. Making the sponge is quick, it's all the icing that takes the time.

yes i tend to use coloured buttercream icing but have also coloured marzipan to make different effects

yes this is quantities for a large 12" cake tin - but we usually make 2 and if you want to make a smaller cake use 3 eggs and adjust the quantities accordingly!

I am going to make my son a T-REX bday cake and have a template - a 9" tin is what they suggest, but I prefer your recipe - are the amounts enough to make that size cake?

You can make this cake in advance but if you are going to do it more than 1 or 2 days in advance i tend to wrap it in cling film and freeze the cake - bring it out and defrost day of use

Made this cake for my husbands 40th and it went down really well. I put double cream, strawberries and bananas in the middle - what a hit!

Got to tell you I've made this cake too and it really is fab. My kids and their friends all love it because it is so light and fluffy and when you put strawberries and cream in the middle it is unbeatable!!!
