Annie Bell's Pretty Dotty Cookies

OK, Smartie Pants, these are for you.

Dice the butter and cream it with the sugar in a food processor until pale and fluffy, then add the golden syrup and vanilla.

Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda together, add to the butter and sugar mixture and whiz to a dough, then remove and wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/400F/gas 6 and lightly oil two baking sheets.

Form the cookie dough into balls the size of a walnut and gently flatten them between
your palms into chubby discs about 5cm in diameter.

Arrange these spaced well apart on the baking sheets and bake for 12-14 minutes until evenly golden and slightly risen.

Remove from the oven and press the Smarties into place while the cookies are still warm, one in the centre and six around the outside.

Leave for 5 minutes then loosen with a palette knife and leave to cool. They keep well for several days in an airtight container.
