Melt the butter in a saucepan on a low heat. Stir in the flour slowly, the mixture will go sticky but donβt worry! Add the milk a little at a time and bring to the boil and then reduce heat. Keep stirring or the mixture will burn. To make the mixture smoother, add more milk a little at a time.
Chef's Tips
To turn into cheese sauce:
Add a handful of grated cheese (or more if you like cheese sauce very cheesy!) and a little extra butter (2 tablespoons instead of one)
To turn into parsley sauce (goes very well with fish dishes):
Add some chopped fresh parsley and stir in once the mixture has cooled
To turn into a lemon sauce:
Add four tablespoons of sugar to the white sauce mix and stir in while hot. Add lemon juice (either from a jar or fresh squeezed) to taste
