    Grease a medium-sized pudding basin. Have ready a steamer or saucepan with boiling water.

    Beat together the butter and sugar until light. Add the eggs one at a time beating thoroughly each time. Add the sieved flour and fold in with a metal spoon.

    Put the golden syrup in the bottom of the bowl and smear up the sides as well. Drop in cake mix, lightly smooth surface. Cover with greaseproof paper, then seal with aluminium foil, place in steamer or in boiling water for 11/2 hours. Remember to check halfway through to make sure you don't need to top-up the water level.

    To serve, run a knife round the inside of the bowl and upend onto a serving plate. Serve with custard.
