This is another recipe passed to me by my mother-in-law

Method

  1. 1

    1.Put margarine,water,salt & sugar into a pan, place
    over a low heat,until the margarine has melted.

    2.Remove pan from heat & allow to cool until luke warm,
    then sprinkle in yeast & set aside for 10 mins.

    3.Sift flour into a warmed mixing bowl.Make a well in
    the centre &pour in yeast mix.

    4.Add egg yolk,then mix together by hand until elastic
    & firm.

    5.Tip onto lightly floured surface & knead for 10 mins
    until smooth.

    6.Return to bowl,cover with a damp cloth & leave in a
    warm place for 1 hour to prove.

    7.Knock back by kneading,then divide into 10 pieces.

    8.Roll each piece into a sausage about 5in long.

    9.Shape into rings & pinch the ends firmly together,
    leave on a lightly floured surface to prove for 10 mins

    10.Pre-heat oven to 200 degC.

    11.Half fill a large pan with water & bring to a simmer.

    12.Drop bagels into water & cook until they rise to the
    surface [only do 2-3 at a time]

    13.Remove from pan with a slotted spoon & place on a
    greased baking tray.

    14 Bake for 20-30 mins until golden brown,remove from
    oven & place on a wire rack to cool.

Chef's Tips

Try sprinkling with poppy seeds,sesame seeds or coarse
sea salt just before baking to give a crunchy topping
