- 80g split red lentils (masoor dhal)
- 50g small split yellow lentils (mung dhal)
- 600 ml water
- 1 tsp chopped fresh ginger
- 1 clove chopped garlic
- ΒΌ tsp turmeric
- 2 fresh green chillies finely chopped
- For The Tarka Use the Following
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion sliced
- Β½ tsp mustard seeds
- Β½ tsp onion seeds
- 2 dried red chillies
- 1 tomato sliced
- 1 tsp salt

Preparation:
Pick over the lentils for any stones before washing them.
Boil the lentils in the water with the ginger, garlic, turmeric and chopped green chillies for 15 minutes or until soft.
Mash the lentil mixture down. The consistency of the mashed lentils should be similar to a thick soup.
If the mixture looks too dry, add more water. Season with the salt.
To prepare the tarka, heat the oil and fry the onion with the mustard and onion seeds, dried red chillies and sliced tomato for 20 minutes until golden brown. Remove any surplus tomato skins if required & take out the chillies after 15m
Pour the tarka over the dhal and eat with Nan bread!!
