5 Terrifying Foods

Food is one of those things we turn to if we feel bad for comfort or when we feel happy we might celebrate with our favourite food. But what happens when food turns against us, what happens when the food we eat makes us feel sick or maybe even make us extremely ill.

The Ackee is a fruit which is a member of the lychee family and is prized as Jamaica’s national fruit. It also happens to be deadly if the fruit is not ripe containing hypoglycin it contains is consumed. It is an unusual looking small fruit, a crab like look with tiny black seedling eyes. All parts of the fruit once ripe can be used medicinally.

Our recommendation is - Make sure your Ackee fruit is ripe & if you are not sure - don’t eat it.

Casu Marzu cheese really is a thing of nightmares out of pure disgust and out of physical dangerous to ones life. The cheese is made from Sheeps-milk and is placed out in the open so allow flies to lay their eggs within in it. As the maggots hatch they feed on the cheese and this starts the cheese’s fermentation. Locals who make the cheese recommend the wearing of eye protection whilst around the cheese as the maggots can jump 6 inches into a persons eyes. When you eat the cheese it burns the inside of your mouth and as you eat it and you swallow the maggots alive. Banned by the European Union you can only buy the cheese via the black market, but beware.. the maggots once consumed can remain alive and can bite and wiggle their way through intestinal walls causing terrible illness and in extreme cases death.

Our recommendation is - Don’t risk your health for cheese, there is plenty of smelly old cheese to try.

Carolina Reaper Chili

Called the hottest chili on the planet it was named after South Carolina where it is cultivated in the run off from a worm farm. The chili was recorded at 2,200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) by the Guinness Book of Records in 2012 and remains to this day the hottest. You can watch 2 guys trying them https://youtu.be/Mb-QVfwCmYg

Our recommendation is - Know your limits when it comes to chilli

Sannakji is a name given to a raw Korean fish dish containing nakji a baby octopus eaten while still alive. The flesh of the octopus is quite safe to eat, the problem comes when the baby octopus is eaten whilst still alive. Even diced into sections and smothered in sesame oil the little legs will attempt to climb back up the eaters throat which can cause them to asphyxiate. The suction cups on the tiny pieces of still living animal continue to grip and move and will latch onto whatever they slide past within the eaters body.

Our recommendation is - Only eat food that is dead first, not only is it dangerous but also very cruel

Tapioca is made from a tropical root called Cassava, as the tapioca dessert that we know from childhood it is safe, but in its pure uncooked form the root is deadly. Cassava contains a toxin called linamarin which the human body turns into a cyanogenic glycoside.
