Mum's cake made without eggs during wartime rationing

Method

    Set oven to Gas reg. 4/5 or 160 degrees Centigrade
    Mix dry ingredients together
    Slowly melt butter and syrup
    Add approximately 20 dessert spoons of warm water
    Stir mixed dry ingredients with the butter mix
    Pour into 2 greased sandwich tins
    Bake for approx. 25 minutes until light & spongy to touch
    Once cool, sandwich together with strawberry jam and top with sieved icing sugar or chocolate icing

This might sound like a stupid question - but at what stage do you add the golden syrup to the recipe? - I'd love to know cos the cake sounds perfect for my friend's daughter who is allergic to eggs
