Greek style Beef Yiouvetsi
Ingredients
- 500grm Braising or Stewing Steak
- 1 Medium Onion peeled and sliced
- 2 garlic cloves. smashed
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 Sprigs Fresh Thyme
- 1 Tablespoon tomato puree
- 800 grm Tinned tomatoes
- 1 Desertspoon lemon juice
- salt and black pepper
- 250 grm orzo pasta . or farfallini pasta
- 50 grms kefalotiri or Cheddar Cheese . grated

It's such an easy dish to make with bags of flavour . I tried it first in Corfu & it brings back many happy memories , of Greece & the Greek people

1 Preheat oven to 230 Degrees C
2 Place sliced onion and garlic into a large casserole dish then add beef.
3 Season with salt and pepper, add dried oregano, tomato puree and lemon juice. Mix together thoroughly.
4 Place in centre of oven and cook for 20 minutes.
5 Remove from oven and turn heat down to 180 C.
6 Add tinned tomatoes and fresh thyme. Return to oven.
7 Cover & Cook for 2 and a half hours, stirring occasionally until meat is tender.
8 15 minutes before end of cooking time, bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook pasta for 3 minutes, then drain.
9 Add pasta to the casserole, stir and return to the oven for 10 minutes.
10 Remove casserole from oven and stir in grated cheese ,
then serve.
Decided to try this one out tonight. Very easy indeed and delicious - thanks for this one! Served it up with some crusty bread and homemade tzatziki. Meat was very tender (falling apart nicely) and sauce nicely flavoured. Would just add that the casserole should be covered for the main 2.5 hours of cooking (was not sure from the recipe but I covered it and it was great). Any more great Greek ideas?
