Description
I love this recipe, because it tastes fantastic and after preperation only needs cooking in the oven. Also it's a complete meal and tastes equally nice when cold.

I usually use a large spring form. So the quantities of the ingredience are based on this.
Mix Mince Beef with egg, and bread crumbs and spice with salt and pepper to taste. Chop Onion and add to the mix. Give the mixture and good kneading (it should be of firm but spreadable consistancy). I always leave the mix in the fridge for an hour or more, to get the flavours going.
In this time, boil the salad potatoes with skin on in salt water, until cooked, but still firm. Leave them to cool. If you wish, you can remove the peel, but I find that causes just extra work, the peel is totally fine to consume. Once cool, slice the potatoes and cover the bottom of the spring form with them. On top of that goes about half of the Mince Beef Mix. Spread out evenly. Now follows a layer of the grated cheese and another layer with the rest of the Mince. On top of the last layer you spread the tomato puree and put the fresh tomatoes sliced on top.
Bake in the oven on the middle tray at about 180 - 200 Degrees Celsius for about 45 Minutes to one hour. DONE! (Sorry, but I'm not firm with gas ovens, so you'd need to figure that out)
To serve: Just slice it into wedges as you would do with a gateau (This is me stating the obvious) and seve on it's own or with a fresh salad.
I hope you enjoy, Pearly :-)
Oh, and btw...ignore the photograph, I don't have one and added this one here from the archive. If your Italian Gateau looks like on the picture I have used, you have done somethine wrong :-).
Chef's Tips
Tip 1: Put some tine foil underneath the spring form because the dish tends to leak a little and this way you don't cause too much mess inside your oven.
Tip 2: If you have leftovers, wrap the wedges in cling film, they remain fit for human consumption for a couple of days when refrigerated.
Tip 3: The dish is ideal to eat either hot or cold, so it makes a great packed lunch for work or school, or even for a picnic.
